How to Find a BabySitter You Can Trust

Many individuals want to know how to find a baby sitter they can trust. There are some steps you can take to ensure the sitter you hire is reliable and trustworthy, however do not be too trusting off the bat. Trust is something that needs to be earned by an individual, especially one that is caring for your child.

Here are some tips to help you find a baby sitter that you can trust and weed out ones that you should not trust:

Run a background check on the individual you are considering bringing into your home to care for your child. A criminal check will cost, however you can do them right from your computer for a small amount of money. The results are usually in within a few minutes.

Call all references that are given to you. Especially past employers. You should make a brief checklist of questions to ask the past employers about their job performance, their reliability, reason for termination of employment etc.

Ask as many questions as you need to about the person, their past, even their plans for the future.
If your heart is telling you that this person is just not “the one” listen to it. Never second guess what your heart tells you. It is usually right.

Once you have hired a sitter for your child/children you should periodically come home early or throughout the day to check on the situation at home. This will keep your sitter on his/her toes while you are gone. Make sure your “pop in” time is different. One week come home briefly at lunch time, another week come home early from work, another you can decided to stop home after a doctors appointment.

You should also pay close attention to your child or children’s behavior. If you begin to notice changes in their behavior you should begin looking for another sitter. This does not mean your child is being mistreated, but children are just like adults, some people just can not get along no matter what.

Also, listen to your child and become more involved in the way they play and talk after they have a new sitter. Children pick things up quickly, so you should be able to tell if inappropriate things (smoking, friends over, cussing etc.) are going on with the sitter while you are not home.

As long as you are aware and involved you can find a baby sitter that will be great for your child.children and have the long term relationship you want. Your child will thrive with the right sitter, and you will see this on a daily basis.

When a Reliable Babysitter is Needed

We all live lives that are never always the same. Even if you have decided to become a stay at home parent, your family or personal situation may still change unexpectedly. There comes a time when every parent faces the fact that he or she needs a babysitter. Even if these parents are surrounded by friends and family who are more than happy to care for the child in question on a regular basis, there will come a day when everyone is busy or otherwise engaged and he realizes that a there is a babysitter needed. What should you do in times like this? What do you do when you’ve asked your friends for recommendations and nobody is available? How can you find a babysitter when you are in desperate need of one?

It is always best to take the safest route when picking a sitter. If you plan to conduct your own search, you have to be extremely meticulous. Take the time to interview your applicants. You also have to ask them to give you the right to check their backgrounds.

Not every parent may have the time to search for a sitter on their own. If this is true for you too, then you would do well to look for a trusted and reputable agency or referral site instead. Agencies and referral sites can help make your life a whole lot easier. Depending on the company you are with, you may be able to expect them to have applicants who already have proof of their clean records. All you would have to do would be to interview prospective applicants and find out if anyone among them matches your needs.

One of the best ways to do this, when you find that you are in a “babysitter needed” situation is to start contacting your local babysitting or nanny placing agencies. A lot of these businesses advertise online and have websites and, most importantly, some specialize in always having a sitter or nanny available to help out parents who need a babysitter on a last minute basis.

The nice thing about utilizing one of these companies is your ability to thoroughly check it out. You can make sure that the company is registered with your local governmental authorities. You can do a check through the Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been filed. You can even do a search for reviews of these companies that have been made on personal blogs and websites.

It is far easier to check out a babysitting or nanny placing agency than it is to do a background check on a single individual applying to fill your “babysitter needed” position. Single entities can lie about their personal information and catching them in that lie can be almost impossible. Of course not every person who answers a “babysitter needed” ad is out to get you but in this day and age when danger seems to be everywhere, it is a good idea to thoroughly check out all of your prospects.

Ask every babysitter you are considering hiring for resumes, personal and professional references and, if you are so inclined, permission to do a background or criminal records check. If the babysitter is offended or refuses to give permission simply move on to someone who does not refuse. Any babysitter who is worth hiring will understand why you are being so thorough and will be happy to comply.

It wasn’t that long ago that people felt comfortable leaving their kids with the neighbors when they couldn’t find a sitter or even leaving them at home alone if the kids were old enough. Now, when parents find that they need a babysitter, they need to be much more careful about whom they hire.

Sittercity.com – Find a Good Babysitter Online

Let’s begin with the tried and tested site ‘Sittercity.com‘ This site has been running for about seven years. They have a national database of 150,000 babysitters that are available part-time, full-time and last minute notice. The choice of babysitters are astounding from different age, cultural and religious backgrounds.

You start off by typing in your zip code. Then a list of babysitters pop up based on your location. By default they are listed by distance from your home. A profile of these babysitters are shown, complete with a picture, age, cultural and religious background. What is really great is that they list their experiences as a babysitter, many of which have also been nannies.

Their Profile also shows what age group of children they have cared for as well. Some babysitters specialize from kids up to 5 years of age, other ten years and older, its a great part of their profile.

What is really comforting about the profile is that it also list their special skills like First Aid, CPR, Cooking and Driving. Right away you know that they have these skills and are willing to cook a quick meal for the kids.

By far the best feature of the profile is their review system. They are reviewed by other mothers such as ourselves. The community rates and reviews the babysitter and nannies they have had. The rating system is based on five star system with a comment section, complete with a referral name. I gave my babysitter Cynthia, 5 stars and a glowing review.

The site also does a background check as well. A little folder with a checkmark appears next to their name to show that they have been checked. The background check includes an identity check, a national criminal background check and if they sitter has any traffic violations. This really made me fell safe when browsing potential sitters.

The site also has a service for you to find a pet sitter, dog walker, house sitter, senior care givers and even tutors. I haven’t tried these services but, if they are even as half as good as the babysitter service, it would be worth trying them out if you need any of these additional services.

Overall ‘Sittercity.com’ is a great site for mothers who need a local area babysitter.

Things to Consider Before Hiring a Babysitter

Choosing a babysitter can be a very daunting task. There are so many factors to take into consideration. I’m going to provide some tips to help you determine if someone is the right babysitter for you.

While you are observing, there are some other things to consider:

  • The sitter should always be in control of the situation.
  • You will want to be sure that the sitter is gentle with your child.
  • She should remain calm and comfortable while interacting with your child.
  • She should be clean and observant of good hygiene.
  • You’ll want to be sure that the sitter listens to you and is able to follow specific instructions you’ve given.
  • Your sitter should be able to provide references. You will definitely want to follow up on these references before hiring your sitter.
  • A babysitter should be trained in first aid and CPR.
  • Keep in mind that for younger children and babies, you will want an older babysitter. A babysitter should be at least 13 years old, but you will need to determine if you want someone older. During the interview process, you should be able to decide if your sitter is mature enough to handle herself in an emergency situation. If you will be hiring a babysitter for an overnight shift, I would recommend that you hire an adult.
